How To Go From Sketch to JPEG

Collin Green // in Creative

Sketch of DimpleTutorials give me a glimpse into how different designers exercise their unique design processes. Almost every project I work on begins with paper and pencil.

With that in mind, I wanted to show you how I go about taking my sketches to a finished product in six simple steps.

6 Steps: A Sketch to a JPEG

Clean Sketch

Step 1: SKETCH! For this tutorial, I selected a very fortunate co-worker to be turned into a cartoon. After a few rounds of sketches of her, I go back and sketch a cleaner version that I will use as a guide in Adobe Illustrator.

Step 2: Using the sketch as my guide, I start to build the vector shapes that make up her face in Adobe Illustrator. This way I can reuse sections for similar parts such as the eyes and mouth. Make sure you save these versions in case you want to go back and make some changes.

Step 3: Once I am happy with the look, I will start to clean up the line quality. I make it clean and consistent. I also merge independent shapes together, and then adjust the curves slightly. Don't get too caught up in this process; it's better to save all the fine-tuning till the end.

Step 4: Eventually, I reach a point that I'm happy with, remembering to save as different versions as I go along.

Step 5: Fine-tuning. Spend extra time cleaning up the design. Adjust curves and eliminate unnecessary anchor points.

Step 6: Adding color. I now use my swatches palette and add color to the character, which in turn leads to the finished product.
